Training worth expense

DAIRY stockmen and women use their employers as their main source of information to help them keep up to date, according to an MDC-funded study.

Martin Seabrook of Nottingham University said for this reason employers needed to stay abreast of new developments and provide on-going training.

"It is worth employers investing in training. More than 40% of dairy staff have been with their employer for over 10 years and a further 20% between six and 10 years," he says. Employees are also involved in important management tasks, such as analysis of records, bull selection and changes in feeding.

In the study, employees identified milking as the most important and most enjoyable task, while parlour and yard cleaning were the least favourite jobs. &#42
