Trials show hybrid rape not worth it
RAPE trials at the ADAS Crop Centres heavy land site at Boxworth, Cambs show fungicide treatment and hybrid seed costs were not economically worthwhile.
Replicated plots grown without fungicide averaged 3.3t/ha (26.7cwt/acre), explains national crop centres manager David McKnight. Treated plot yields were no different, reflecting the low disease pressure this year.
Restored hybrid variety Pronto and varietal association hybrid Synergy yielded about 3.4t/ha, which was not enough to justify the extra cost of hybrid seed, adds Mr McKnight.
