True rapeseed hybrid on test
HYBRID rapeseed is set for a boost thanks to an agreement between PBI Cambridge and French breeder Rustica Prograin Genetique to develop such varieties.
A fully-restored hybrid has gone into official UK trials this year as a result. Unlike recently introduced composite hybrids, it does away with the need for a pollinator variety, which can lead to unreliable seed set in inclement weather, says PBICs Richard Fisher. PBIC hopes for field-scale production in 1997.
The agreement will allow both companies an earlier look at each others material to target both markets more effectively, he adds. "The expertise of Rusticas hybrid technology and the strength of our breeding programme will complement each other and produce high yielding, better quality varieties."n
