Twenty lots top £1000

SMILES are broadening at dairy sales in the south-west as more cattle top the four-figure barrier. And at the eighth home sale of high-genetic Holstein Friesians from Bernard and Valerie Frys Littlebredy herd at Dorchester, Dorset, there were 20 lots at 1000gns and over.

Littlebredy Hannah 10th, an Astro Jet daughter due with her fourth, topped the trade at 1500gns. Her last lactation of 11281kg was worth £2196 at 24p/litre. She joins the Sturcombe herd at Bridport, Dorset.

A second calver by Russelldale Promise, Littlebredy Aconite 32nd, made 1380gns to R Vickery, Dorchester. She had given 8900kg at 4.30% as a heifer.

Another from the same family by Startmore Supreme and classified VG-85 made 1320gns to Chapman and Sons, Blandford, Dorset who left with eight lots.

Calved heifers reached 1180gns for Stowell May 2nd, a Starbuck daughter.

The sale included a guest consignment of the eight-month-old bull calf Banton Tornado from Rob Buglers Banton herd. This Titan son out of SFL Southwind Karma, one of the USAs top protein cows, made 2000gns to A May, Sherborne, Dorset.

AVERAGES: 21 calved cows £1013; 10 in-calf cows £989; 27 calved heifers £845 and eight in-calf heifers £836. (R B Taylor and Sons)
