  • THE most recent wheat quality update, based on nearly 950 samples, indicates mixed changes from the previous update.

In terms of protein content and small grains content, the quality of the wheat crop is generally higher compared to a fortnight ago.

However, UK average Hagberg falling numbers have continued to fall, typically by nearly 10 points per fortnight, and are predicted to fall further.

The greatest decline in quality occurred over the Midlands whose Hagberg number, protein level and specific weights fell, while the percentage of small grains in the sample rose.

Barley samples from the Scottish harvest, although only recently cut, have lifted the UK average crop quality. Scottish barley samples offer significantly lower screenings and small grain content than the UK average.

Nearly two-thirds of samples have now been received and analysed and a clearer picture is emerging both on a regional and a national level. However, definitive HGCA results will only be available once the surveys full sample numbers have been collected and analysed.

  • The latest conference organised by the HGCA, to take place in London tomorrow (Wednesday), will examine price prospects for the rest of the season and at ways forward for the arable farmer. Well-known experts from WTO and the Australian wheat board will lead the debate with HGCA and financial specialists on strategies for survival. Phone 0207 520 3972 for further details.
