Two types of passport – one call

PEDIGREE Holstein Friesian producers can now register calves and obtain passports for both pedigree and non-pedigree stock in one hit over the phone, thanks to new technology developed by Holstein UK & Ireland.

Launching the freephone registration at the Royal Show, HUKI director of breed development, David Hewitt, explained how it would reduce paperwork.

"Many members have told us the amount of paperwork on their farms has doubled over the last year. We felt could develop new services that would relieve this pressure."

Pilot work on the system involving 500 HUKI members showed that it took only 90 seconds an animal to provide information for pedigree and BCMS registration.

This speediness is possible because the system is able to fill in gaps using herd information already stored on the organisations database. But members must register within 14 days to obtain BCMS passports.

"We need to be disciplined and stick to 14 days to allow sufficient time for BCMS to process the passports within the 45 day limit," said Mr Hewitt.

Pedigree registration costs £10 and £1 will be charged for registering non-pedigree animals for BCMS. &#42
