UK abattoirs disadvantaged
meat processors, according to a report by the Meat and Livestock Commission.
The report found that, in mainland Europe, almost all the statutory meat inspection charges levied are picked up either by regional or national governments.
The report also highlights the fact that abattoirs in France, Belgium and Denmark are not obliged to have full-time veterinary inspectors, in contrast to the UK where vets must be present at all times.
The government is currently reviewing the UKs meat inspection regime.
