UN beefs up Iraqi oil-for-food deal

THE Iraqi oil-for-food deal has been boosted from 2,000 kcal per
person per day to nearly 2,500kcal, following the peace deal struck by United Nations general secretary Kofi Annan.

It will include animal proteins for the first time with the addition of cheese and powdered milk.

Iraq will start working on a distribution plan for the expanded oil-for-food deal. The US and the UK have been accused of blocking contracts because some products can have dual proposes such as veterinary supplies or agri-chemicals.

William Gardner, the oil-for-food expert at the UNs Food and Agriculture
Organisation in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, said the enhanced deal should at
last stop the deterioration in health and nutrition.
