Unilever puts plant breeder up for sale

UNILEVER said it would sell Plant Breeding International Cambridge (PBIC), its seed business.

PBIC is a conventional plant breeder which produces Europes leading winter wheat strain. PBIC also breeds barley, oilseed rape and pulses.

It is expected to attract biotechnology companies producing genetically modified products, which are looking for the best crop on which to apply their technology.

Monsanto, Dupont, Novartis, Schering and Zeneca are mooted as possible bidders.
