Upland inquiry call

LABOUR has called for an inquiry into upland farming by the Commons agriculture select committee.

The committee has already decided to hold an inquiry into agri-environment schemes but Labour wants it widened to involve hill livestock compensatory allowances.

MP Elliot Morley (Lab, Glanford and Scunthorpe) said a detailed study into the problems of the uplands would be welcome on a number of fronts including:

lThe need to establish the most effective way to support upland farming communities and the best support mechanisms.

lThe need to recognise the detrimental effect of overstocking and ways of ensuring that is reduced.

lThe best way to integrate various agri-environment schemes to link with good farming and environmental management.
