US lifts sanctions for wheat sales

THE US has lifted its sanctions on wheat sales to India and Pakistan, imposed in response to their nuclear testing, because they are hurting US farmers.

President Bill Clinton said he had signed legislation to exempt the export credits for farm sales from US sanctions imposed on India and Pakistan last month.

The move follows a sharp decline in world wheat prices. It paves the way for the US to sell 13m bushels of wheat to Pakistan – one of its biggest customers.
