US paper apologises to banana empire on front page
THE Cincinnati Enquirer has apologised on the top of its front page for articles about the Chiquita banana empire. It has also promised to pay it $10 million (£6.25m) to stave off a lawsuit.
The chief reporter who headed the year-long investigation has been sacked. The series of articles criticised the companys business practices.
The newspaper admitted the articles were baseless after it found that the reporters main source of information was stolen from internal company voicemails. The reporter had claimed that the material was handed over by an unnamed executive.
