US tariffs anger sheep farmers
AUSTRALIA and New Zealand are to take the US to the World Trade Organisation over the American decision to limit lamb imports.
President Bill Clinton said earlier in the week that the US would limit lamb imports from the Australia and New Zealand to a combined tonnage of just over 31,000 tons.
He also said a 9% tariff would be imposed on imports in the first year of a three-year programme and excess volumes over the quota would suffer a 40% tariff.
The Australian government conveyed “absolute disgust” to the US ambassador in Canberra. Mark Vaile, Australias trade minister, warned of a “global trade war”.
