USA under pressure on GM food

THE US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is coming under pressure for stronger controls on genetically modified (GM) foods.

A lawyer for a coalition of scientists, consumer groups and religious leaders claims the FDA ignored warnings from scientists when it designed its policies.

Earlier this week, nine environmental and consumer groups sent a letter to President Bill Clinton demanding a ban on GM maize.

The letter cited a Cornell University study which found that certain varieties of GM maize may harm butterflies.

Steven Druker, speaking on behalf of the Alliance for Bio-integrity, said he had proof some FDA scientists were concerned about the safety of GM foods.
