THE United States has authorised subsidised export of 30,000 tonnes of barley in the latest round of its trade war with the European Union.

The move came the day after European Commission officials warned the USA that any resumption of subsidised grain exports would be against farmers interests on both sides of the Atlantic.

The US grain is expected to be destined for Algeria, Cypus and Norway – which are traditionally buyers of EU grain. US agriculture secretary Dan Glickman said the shipments were in response to a recent sale of 30,000 tonnes of EU-subsidised barley to California.

EU officials in Brussels said they were baffled by the US announcement. The EU sale was a “one-off” and in accordance with international trading agreements, said Commission spokesman Gerry Keily.

Meanwhile, Brussels yesterday granted EU farmers its final weekly export tender of the season. More than 80,000 tonnes of wheat and nearly 120,000 tonnes of barley will be exported at refund rates of Ecu25.95-53.00/ tonne.
