Lively trading for Limousins
STRONG demand for pedigree Limousin cattle continued apace at Portadown where the Northern Ireland Limousin clubs show and sale produced a rip-roaring trade.
Buyers packed the sale-ring to compete for stock and from the outset it was clear that few were "window shopping". The first half hours trading was lively but bidders moved into top gear when Toomebridge, Co Antrim, breeder Charles McAuleys stylish bull Carmorn Manus was paraded into front of the buyers.
Appealing for its exceptional muscling and with an acceptable Beef Value of 24, this son of Grange Janville was out of an Umar cow and had a 400-day-weight of 587kg. He realised the days top price of 2750gns to J R and A J Pollock, Coleraine, Co Londonderry.
Hot on his heels at 2600gns came a smart son of Goldies Indulgent from the Laurelmount herd of Patrick and Mark Fearon, Lislea, Newry. He was bred out of a Lumbylaw dam and taken by Jack Collins, Ballymoney, Co Antrim.
A final call of 2500gns from Frank McNally, Newry, Co Down, was good enough to secure him Rahoney McFarland from * and D McFarland, Trillick, Co Tyrone. Combining the best of two Cumbria-based herds he is by Haltcliffe Inferno and out of a Shire dam. McFarland stood reserve junior champion under judge Mr Victor Woods of the Greenmount Agricultural College, Co Antrim.
There were 10 bulls at 2000gns and over and the overall bull average was £2006.
A strong trade for females saw a Mereside Filipo heifer with calf at foot from Noel Murphy, Newry, make 1900gns. A served heifer by Duc stood champion for Derek Shanks, Banbridge. It made 1700gns. (Automart) *
A CALVED heifer by Hanoverhill Lieutenant made the top price of £830 at the monthly sale of Holstein Friesian dairystock at Uttoxeter, Staffs.
Marlbury Lieutenant Pinky was from N R Brandon, Stafford, and claimed by B * Cook, Stafford. She was bred out of a Broker heifer that gave 8900kg.
Two entries from Bedfordia Farms, Bedford, were among the high prices. A calved heifer by Moetvale Aerolyte made £760 and a second calver realised £690. (Bagshaws) *
