Very early harvest
FORAGE maize harvest on the dry matter sites in the farmers weekly/Coop De Pau survey has been up to eight weeks earlier than previous years (see diagram).
Much of the crop has been or will be harvested within the ideal window of 28-32% DM. The quality of the crop this year is reported as exceptional, due to high starch levels.
Coop De Paus UK agents Grainseed, James Woodbridge, said: "Crops that are left should ideally be harvested before the frost hits them. When this is not possible then definitely harvest after the first frost."
Some sites in Scotland have been harvested already, he said. *
