Viking early pay day
GRAIN co-op Viking Cereals is offering to bring forward May cheques for members of its long pool who also keep cattle and have suffered from the beef collapse.
According to chief executive, David Balderson, this will help cash flow to the tune of £20/t of wheat committed. And with another £15 due on June 1 (linked to this seasons better-than-expected grain price) and a balancing cheque on Jul 15, more cash help could be available for those in dire need.
"The BSE situation is going to hit some of our members very hard," he said. "We have more mixed farmers in this area than other grain co-ops, including some dairy farmers." *
