Warning over Serbia’s toxic crops

THE Yugoslav government is hiding from its people the risks to health and food from the tonnes of toxic chemicals leeching into crops after Natos bombing of the countrys industrial infrastructure, warn European environmentalists.

The European Federation of Green Parties has raised concerns after a visit to Pancevo, which suffered air strikes on its oil refineries, fertiliser and petrochemical plants.

The exact extent of the damage will not be known for some time.

The Yugoslav government imposed a temporary ban on publishing environmental information about Natos attacks when the war ended on 9 June.
