Weather hits soya bean crops

RAIN has damaged the harvested soya bean crop in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, which produces 75% of the countrys soya beans.

Indias soya bean output is expected to fall to less than 5m tonnes in 1999-2000, from 5.9m tonnes last year.

In the US, the worlds largest soya bean producer, production is expected to fall. The US department of agriculture is forecasting a 73.4m crop, against an earlier estimate of 80m tonnes.

US production has been hit by mid-season drought, shrinkage in the area under the crop and a fall in productivity.

Production in China and Argentina is expected to offset the falls in the US and India.
