MILK output rose by over 3 million litres during the second week of this month, according to the latest Intervention Board statistics.

IB officials estimate 239,391,662 litres of milk were delivered to selected purchasers in the week ending 13 December. The figure compares to 236,112,452 litres during the previous week.

The news sparked increased interest in the market for leased milk quota from farmers eager to avoid paying what looks certain to be a hefty super levy when the milk year ends next April.

Leased 4% quota is currently trading at around 10-10.5ppl – a rise of about 1ppl on the week.
