Weigh pigs for the best finish

PRODUCERS are urged to finish pigs as close as possible to target weight at slaughter to increase returns.

According to Cotswold pig consultant Paul Wright, too many pigs are sent off farm lighter than they should be because producers fail to weigh them, but this can be the most profitable job on the farm, he says.

He warns that the last 20% of sales generates 100% of profit, and that every 1% below target reduces profit by 5%.

"It is difficult to judge the weight of pigs accurately enough to avoid weighing. Most farms have room to take pigs to heavier weights, and with good genetics theres little danger of pigs becoming over-fat. Its those last few kilos which generate most of the profit," he says.n
