Welfare award

JUNIOR farm minister Elliot Morley has launched a new training award aimed at improving the standard of care for animals being transported.

The award, run by the National Proficiency Tests Council, has been devised to meet demand from livestock hauliers who have to comply with tighter government welfare rules.

MAFF now insists that hauliers must be able to demonstrate their competence in handling, transporting, and caring for the stock in their charge.

NPTC has already trained verifiers and assessors with a view to the first certificates being awarded later this year.
