Welfare groups challenge Hogg
ANIMAL welfare groups will take farm minister Douglas Hogg to court next week in their continuing battle to prove the UK can unilaterally ban live calf exports.
The RSPCA and Compassion in World Farming won the right to bring judicial review proceedings against the minister in July. The full hearing will begin on Dec 12.
Both welfare groups expect the High Court judge to refer the case to the European Court of Justice because of its European significance.
MAFF has consistently maintained that it is prevented by European free trade rules from banning calf exports. But, after seeking legal advice, the welfare groups decided the minister was wrong and launched court action. *
