Welfare to fore at annual Fair

WELFARE issues concerning both pigs and poultry will be brought sharply into focus at next months British Pig & Poultry Fair.

Being staged on May 10 and May 11 at the National Agricultural Centre, Stoneleigh, Warks, the event will feature research updates from several centres on welfare in transit of broilers and pigs, osteoporosis in laying hens, alternatives to stalls and tethers for sows, and improvements to the environment of the laying hen.

The event is expected to attract 20,000 visitors over the two days when most of the UK suppliers of livestock, feed, housing and equipment to the pig and poultry industries will be promoting their wares and services.

The number of international companies exhibiting at the fair has doubled to over 30 since last years event. They include firms from Belgium, Holland, Italy, Spain, the USA and Canada.

Among the new poultry products to look out for will be Maywicks latest range of gas brooders, Technical Services & Supplies microprocessor for handling egg quality measurements, Hoechsts new salmonella vaccine, Chickways new poultry sizing and distribution system, the Cobb Breeding Companys latest broiler management guide and Arden Wood Shavings poultry bedding and delivery system.
