Welsh BSE cases fall

By Martin Hickman, Parliamentary Staff, PA News

THERE were 139 suspected cases of mad cow disease reported in Wales so far this year, the Government disclosed tonight.

Junior Welsh minister Win Griffiths said in a Commons written reply that 49 of the cases had been confirmed as BSE.

“The BSE epidemic continues in sharp decline,” Mr Griffiths told MPs. “The number of suspected cases so far reported in 1998 in Wales is 32% less than for the same period in 1997.”
