Welsh First Secretary faces censure
by Robert Davies
A MOTION of no-confidence has been tabled against Alun Michael, the Welsh Assemblys First Secretary, for his failure to sack Welsh farm minister Christine Gwyther.
The move follows Mr Michaels decision to stand by Ms Gwyther after the Assembly censured her over the handling of a planned £750,00 Wales-only calf processing scheme.
Tory leader Nick Bourne, who laid the motion, claimed that the Labour minority administration had shown disregard bordering on contempt for the majority opinion of the Assembly.
If the motion were carried Mr Michael would have to resign.
Both Plaid Cymru and the Liberal Democrats will not support the motion because they feel Ms Gwythers position is not important enough to warrant jeopardising the Assemblys work.
