Wheat business move

HYBRID wheats will be available to UK growers again this autumn, despite Du Ponts decision to axe its programme earlier this year.

A deal struck with German seed firm Saaten-Union will see Du Ponts hybrid wheat business move to Picardie, north of Paris, with breeding and testing facilities in Cowlinge, Suffolk.

The move gives Saaten-Union, which bought Monsantos hybrid wheat programme 18 months ago, a monopoly position in the supply of hybrid wheats in Europe. Commercial varieties already account for 60,000ha (148,000 acres) in France and Germany. &#42
