Wheat newcomers

TWO new high yielding wheats could boost exports and provide superior quality for the home market. That is the claim of breeder CPB Twyford.

In official trials Chianti has out-yielded current top performers Brigadier, Beaver and Hussar. Chopin Alveograph readings are within the required range and a possible 6 for bread-making means it is well suited to UK and export markets, says the company.

Magellan scores well in the absence of fungicides, thanks to an "exceptional" rating of 7 for Septoria tritici resistance, it adds. It suits early drilling.

Limited tonnages of C2 seed will be sold through Gorham and Bateson and Seed Innovations this autumn.
