Wheat yield below average, quality good
WHEAT yields are below average, but expected for Tony Wright, manager for De Monfort University Farms, north of Lincoln. They have combined half of the wheat crop.
Malacca has yielded between 6.8-8.6t/ha (2.75-3.5t/acre). “This is under the 3.5t/acre (8.6t/acre) average we expect.”
There is more to do, but so far the quality has been good. “The protein is 14%, the Hagbergs are over 300, although the bushel is a bit low at 73Kg/hl.”
The weather has been kind the last three days, allowing them to combine between 15-17% moisture. “We had 7mm of rain on Saturday (18 August). I heard reports of wheat sprouting in the area. But we have had none yet.”
The biggest influence on lower yields was the winter. Not all the wheat crop was planted, with spring oilseed rape replacing some of it.
Pearl winter barley was exceptional yielding 7.2t/ha (2.9t/acre), and making malting grade with 1.6-1.7% nitrogen.
Escort oilseed rape also yielded well on the medium loam soil, 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre), which is above average.”
