…while France tolerates it
FRANCE tolerated the illegal ritual slaughter of an estimated 40,000 sheep over the weekend, reports The Times.
The slaughter, which involved the sheep being killed by having their throats cut, formed part of an Islamic festival.
The paper reports that inspectors from Britains Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) witnessed several incidents.
The animal welfare organisation will be taking its evidence to the Ministry of Agriculture and the European Commission to put pressure on the French government to act.
The European Commission passed a directive in 1993 preventing the slaughter of animals outside official abattoirs. French law was brought into line in October 1997.
