Whole-crop name

TO avoid confusion between alkaline and fermented whole-crop wheat, Lancashire feed compounders Dugdales are dubbing the alkaline-preserved whole-crop using Home n Dry as Alkalage.

Use of an activating enzyme enabled sufficient ammonia to be produced for alkaline preservation, with just 2% of added urea, claims Dugdales.

It says introducing a third of the forage ration as alkaline wholecrop cereals at pH9 and 60% dry matter to fermented grass silage at pH4 and 20% dry matter, produces a fourfold drop in acidity. &#42
