Wiseman bid for Aberdeen dairy control
SPARKS could fly in the Scottish milk industry if Robert Wiseman Dairies succeeds in a plan to buy Aberdeen Milk (Amco).
The deal would give Wiseman control of virtually all dairy farmers in the Aberdeen area, preventing them from supplying other dairies.
One party likely to be annoyed is Claymore, the processing arm of the North of Scotland Milk Co-operative Society.
Last December, Express Dairies, the Leicester-based milk processor paid £2.2m for a 51% sake in Claymores liquid milk division.
Express has invested in extra processing capacity in a bid to grab market share in Wisemans core market in the central Scottish belt.
Wiseman has over 80% of the Scottish milk market since its acquisition of Scottish Pride two years ago.
Amco has 120 farmer members, producing 90m litres annually. Wiseman buys 93% of that milk, which accounts for about 15% of its milk purchases.
