Wives go on the road to push our pork and bacon
IF its Friday (Oct 24) it must be Aberdeen – and day 23 of the Ladies In Pigs Roadshow.
Ladies in Pigs is a group of pig farmers and farmers wives whose aim is to increase the consumption of British pork and bacon, and about 40 of them are taking part in the autumn promotion which is supported by the Pork and Bacon Promotion Council and Asda, in whose car parks the demonstrations take place.
The tour was launched in Chatham, Kent, at the end of September and takes in 14 towns. After Aberdeen the members will be asking their purpose built trailer-van in Glasgow-Govan (Oct 27-28) and end their tour in Kilmarnock (Oct 30-31).
Pork mince is on their menu and the members are showing quick, easy dishes which are ideal for todays hectic lifestyles. A selection of these recipes are reproduced here.
Dry frying is recommended for each of these recipes. It is a healthier method of frying, LIPS explains, where only the fat from the meat is used. Place the meat in a large cold non-stick wok or saucepan. If you dont have a non-stick pan use one teaspoonful (5ml) of oil to prevent sticking. Cook over a low heat until some fat runs out of the meat, increase the heat and fry the meat until it changes colour – about four to six minutes.
