WTO to back US banana sanctions?
THE USA is expected to win World Trade Organisation (WTO) authorisation next week to impose $200 million (£124m) worth of sanctions against European Union (EU) exports.
The sanctions mark the latest stage in the long-running dispute between the USA and the EU over Europes preferential treatment for Caribbean bananas.
The WTO will formally ratify a request by the USA to impose 100% duties on a wide variety of EU goods, including Italian cheese and ham.
The EU is still considering whether to appeal against the verdict.
