Yields down at start of lifting

BILL LEGGE started lifting his 240ha (600 acres) crop on Monday (10 September) around Downham Market on the edge of the Fens. The entire crop goes into store.

“Yields are down this year by about 20%. After test digs were expecting 40t/ha, while last year we made 50t/ha.

“Its got something to do with late plantings, but its not just that because planting was late last year. The soil structure must have been damaged last winter. The crops have looked well enough.”

They started on Sante and have got King Edward, Maris Piper, Desiree and Saxon to go. The Sante are for Pre-Pack for MBM. “Weve had no problems with quality.”

They market the potatoes from November to July. But he is concerned of the current market price. “Hopefully the lower yields will translate into a higher price.”
