Young HFs see bids go to 2500gns

BLIZZARD conditions at Hereford during last week did little to deter trade at the sale of the younger portion of Peter Andrews Ruckhall herd of Holstein Friesians.

Nearly 70 lots averaged just over £1000 as buyers from as far away as Kent and the east Midlands made up the 100-strong crowd at Trevannon Farm, St Weonards. The best cattle on offer were confidently taken with eight making over 1500gns.

Top call came for the much-admired cow Fidlers Tenn Naomi (VG-87). This Tennessee sired third calver, out of a Calbrett Laser dam, had given over 12,200kg with her second and was sold freshly calved. Buyer at 2550gns was A W Pearce, Sangar Farms Ltd, Berkeley, Glos who claimed nine of the best Ruckhall lots.

Daventry, Northants dairy farmers B and L Whitfield and Son gave 2450gns for the in-calf heifer Platinum Chief Mark Tina to add to their Alderbarrow herd. A heifers calf, her Inspiration sired dam gave 9618kg in her first note. Tina was sold in-calf to Holywell Cherokee.

AVERAGES: 57 cows and calved heifers £1043 and 11 served heifers £977. (Norton and Brooksbank)
