Your vote for potato body
GROWERS are being urged to vote this spring in favour of a successor body to coordinate levy-funded research and development and provide market information once the Potato Marketing Scheme comes to an end in June 1997.
If adopted, funding for the Great Britain Potato Organisation (GBPO) would be split between growers and the rest of the industry, including merchants, packers and processors.
Potato growers would pay an area levy of £35 or £40/ha (£14 or £16/acre) depending on agreement over the transfer of assets, along with a top-up tonnage levy. The rest of the industry would be subjected, for the first time, to a 20p/t levy at first point of sale. *
