Freedom Food is launching a new campaign next week aimed at encouraging consumers to consider what eggs are used in their food when eating out.

The “Simply Ask” campaign is part of its fifth annual Farm Animal Week taking place on 19-25 October. It is being supported by several celebrity chefs, including Antony Worrall Thompson and Raymond Blanc.

Freedom Food highlighted new research showing that 34% of consumers are more likely to let farm animal welfare concerns influence which restaurants they eat in compared with five years ago.

“We are asking restaurants to only use eggs from non-cage hens, such as free-range or barn. At present 80% of eggs used in food service (restaurants, pubs and cafes) and ready-made food products use eggs from hens kept in cages. While this is down from last year at 85% there is still a long way to go,” said Freedom Food.

To back up the campaign, Freedom Food plans to publish a restaurant guide highlighting those restaurants supporting the Simply Ask campaign.

The survey was carried out by YouGov in April, questioning 2017 adults.
