The Forager has uncovered a morsel guaranteed to churn your stomach

Filipino restaurant Maharlika in New York has held a “balut” eating contest – a balut being the embryo in a fertilised duck egg, around two weeks away from hatching, boiled to serve.

Head chef of Maharlika is quoted saying that the recipe is considered an aphrodisiac. “It’s supposed to give people power.”

Winner of the contest, 27-year-old Wayne Aleginio, managed 18 baluts in five minutes – more than one every 20 seconds. After the competition he said he was still hungry.
