Mega investment in green energy by 2 Sisters Food Group

2 Sisters Food Group has signed a new multi-million pound deal with green energy company H2 Energy, to convert food waste and animal by-products into energy at all 43 of its food factories.

The first phase of the project will see the so-called Bio-Refineries commissioned at 10 locations over the next three years, including the poultry sites at Flixton, Willand, Scunthorpe, Coupar Angus, Llangefni and Sandycroft.

Each Bio-Refinery is bespoke to the site and combines physical, chemical and biological processes to maximise biogas production from any given feedstock.

This is used for the production of electricity and thermal energy, which is then used on site.

“The projects not only provide significant savings in energy and waste management costs, but support the drive towards a lower carbon footprint and zero waste to landfill,” said a statement.

When all 10 projects are fully commissioned, Phase 1 is projected to deliver up to 40,000MWh of electricity and 70,000MWhth of thermal energy a year, “enough electricity to power a town with 10,000 homes”.

It will also deliver annual savings of approximately 35,000t of carbon and save an estimated 20,000 lorry movements.
