Have your say on new poultry apprenticeship scheme
© Tim Scrivener UK poultry businesses have been offered the opportunity to shape the structure and content of two new apprenticeships developed through the government’s “Trailblazer” project.
The government has asked groups of employers to develop sector-specific apprenticeship schemes, and for the poultry sector, two standards are in development.

The first, entitled Poultry Worker, is aimed at farm operatives and hatchery staff, while the Poultry Technician apprenticeship is aimed assistant and farm managers.
Part of drawing up these standards is a consultation, which closes at the end of November.
Faccenda Foods’ Andrew Brodie is chair of the Trailblazer Group. He said: “We are very proud of the strides taken to develop and improve standards in Poultry Agriculture over the past 10 years through the Poultry Passport scheme.
“Over 5,000 workers have registered for the scheme to date, demonstrating their commitment to high standards and professional development.
“However, we now have a fantastic opportunity to go further and create standards fit for the future. These new apprenticeships will enable us to develop the relevant skills that are critical to all our businesses, big and small.”
‘Great chance’
NFU chief poultry adviser Gary Ford added: “It has been great to see so many groups involved and engaged from across the supply chain, and all different sizes of employer – from the largest to individual farmers.
“This is a great chance for all employers to have their say and we would encourage people to take part in the consultation and help influence the future of apprenticeships in poultry.”
