Mull has a coastline of about 300 miles and mild climate which is moderated by the Gulf stream. As a result there are very few frosts ensuring a wide variety of plants and trees thrive. The island is home to 123 different bird species including the white-tailed sea eagle. Minke whales, porpoises and dolphins are among the sea life that can be found around Mull and Ulva.
Ulva is situated just off the mainland and is accessed across the Sound of Ulva (a few hundred metres) from the settlement of Ulva Ferry on Mull to the pier on the Isle of Ulva.
Principal shops and facilities can be found on Mull at either Salen or Tobermory (some 10 miles and 17 miles from Ulva Ferry respectively). Salen provides a general store, post office, hotel and restaurant whilst Tobermory has a wider variety of shops and restaurants.
