Meat companies support students

Leading companies in the poultrymeat sector have come together to offer nine students at Harper Adams University College scholarships and placements, to help them forge a career in the poultry sector.

Operating under the British Poultry Council (BPC), the companies involved are Aviagen, Bernard Matthews Foods, Cargill Meats Europe, Cranberry Foods, Gressingham Foods and PD Hook.

Under what is now known as the British Poultry Council Scholarship, (formerly the PD Hook Scholarship), nine successful students will have a paid placement year, and receive up to £3500 towards their tuition fees for the year’s either side of the placement.

One recipient is Charlie Morris from Powys, who is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Agri-food Marketing. “I never imagined of a career in poultry, however the scholarship has opened my eyes to the exciting and prosperous opportunities the industry holds,” he said.

“The scholarship with Cargill will allow me to progress and gain skills within the poultry industry.”

BPC chairman John Reed was on hand to present the awards. “This is our first year of scholarships and we are looking forward to having the students,” he said. “We hope you come back and tell everyone about what a wonderful world British Poultry is.”

The awards were made at a special ceremony overseen by the Harper Adams Development Trust in which a total of 70 awards were made to a total value of £120,000.
