Disastrous peas near Anstruther

Andrew Peddie has finished combining winter barley and oilseed rape at Cornceres Farm, Anstruther, Fife, and hopes to clear up the peas today (26 August).

“It’s been a very catchy harvest, and the peas have been a complete disaster,” he said.

The Zero4 peas had looked very good, but five inches of rain decimated the crop two weeks ago as it was dying off.

“It all went down and the pods have opened; it’s been very difficult to combine and has only yielded 1.85t/ha (0.75t/acre).”

Winter barley was also disappointing, at 7.9t/ha (3.2t/acre), said Mr Peddie. “The Volume did a lot better than the Amarena, but it’s all in one heap.”

Emerson oilseed rape, however, was a lot more pleasing, at well over 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre).

“Our wheat is about five or six days away and it looks very mixed. Where it was sown early, in good conditions, it looks pretty well, but late sown crops in bad weather will be poor.”
