A sodden harvest – harvest update
With the ground sodden, Mr Hinchcliffe explains: “You can hear the ground squelch under foot. If I put a combine in the field it‘ll sink.”
He‘s harvested 100ha (250 acres) of wheat so far and still has another 170ha (420 acres) to do, but is doubtful he will make more progress this week (w/e Aug 27) because of wet weather.
The quality of his crops harvested so far has been good, although there is some sprouting in the laid wheat.
“If we don‘t get a good weather window next week, we‘ll be stuffed.”
Mr Hinchcliffe‘s first wheats have been yielding around 10.5 t/ha (4.25 t/acre) while the second wheats have yielded closer to 9 t/ha (3.64 t/acre).
However, this is still not a good harvest. “It‘s depressing – it‘s probably the worst harvest I‘ve ever seen,” he adds.
After the wheat, Mr Hinchcliffe needs two good weeks to finish harvest and he‘s getting slightly worried that two weeks of good weather might not materialise.
