Andrew Kerr finishes winter barley

Andrew Kerr has finished harvesting his barley at Wyldingtree Farm, North Weald, Essex, and is now waiting for the rape to ripen.

“Barley yields seem to be fairly reasonable at 6.2-8.6t/ha (2.5-3.5t/acre) – and in West Essex there doesn’t seem to be much left to cut,” he said. His 17ha (42 acres) of Pearl grown for seed averaged 7.4t/ha (3t/acre). “We’re quite pleased with that.”

Rape yields had been poor in the area, with pigeon damage and some late disease, said Mr Kerr. “People are struggling to scratch 2.5t/ha (1t/acre). Ours is looking fair – the hybrid Morcand is very good but the non-hybrid Hearty is mediocre.”

Mr Kerr expected to try starting his Cordiale winter wheat in about 10 days (3 July). “The second wheat looks awful, but the first wheat looks reasonably good.”
