Barley slow to ripen, says Glynn

Glynn Jones is cutting oilseed rape near St. Asaph, North Wales, today (27 July), having come out of barley which was not quite fit.

“The barley has been slow coming ripe – there have been a lot of volunteers so it’s quite green.”

So far he had cut Suzuka at his home farm, which yielded a pleasing 7.4t/ha (3t/acre).

The 8ha (20 acres) of Cubic oilseed rape cut so far today had also yielded well, at about 4.3t/ha (1.75t/acre). “It’s going quite well.”

Mr Jones had another 69ha (170 acres) of oilseed rape to cut at his customer’s farm, as well as 40ha (100 acres) of barley.

“The Diego winter wheat is coming on quickly – it tested at 23% this morning so will probably only be a week away.

“It looks exceptional and the farmer reckons it could be a 12.3t/ha (5t/acre) crop.”
