Better starch for better markets from NIAB

Cereals exhibitor 2009

NIAB’s focal point at Cereals will be the Smart Carbohydrate Centre.

This joint initiative between NIAB and the John Innes Centre aims to identify sources of genetic variation in wheat and barley for use by plant breeders in developing crop varieties with new, improved types of starch.

This offers potential to improve the quality of flour and malt for baking, brewing and distilling, says NIAB, as well as opportunities to tailor starch composition to a range of industrial uses, including the production of paint, glue, paper, cosmetics and biodegradable packaging and plastics.
