Cambridgeshire harvest better than expected

Cambridgeshire farmer David Fountain had finished wheat harvest with only 6ha (15ac) of Linseed left to cut on Delavals Farm, Peterborough.

“The wheat went better than expected this year considering the dry weather.” Two hundred hectares (500ac) of Solstice, Robigus and Nijinsky had averaged 9.2t/ha (3.68t/ac), which was a little better than last year. Bushel weights were “pleasantly surprising” in the late 70s kg/hl.

“Harvest was very much early this year, probably by a fortnight, but it didn’t affect the crops at all.”

Quality had been good but he was particularly pleased with Nijinsky over the other varieties. All the wheat was to go into the local pool system.

Mr Fountain planned to grow similar varieties over a similar area next season.
